405 is aluminum-stabilized ferritic stainless steel bright bar.
Aluminum binds free carbon to prevent chromium carbide precipitation at 400~600℃, eliminating intergranular corrosion after welding which troubles standard 410 & 420. Nickel-free design delivers low material cost with better oxidation resistance than 410.
Balanced room-temperature mechanical properties with medium hardness, moderate plasticity for simple bending & stamping, poor cold heading performance. It cannot be quenched hard; no martensitic transformation hardening. Annealing at 780~850℃ softens material and improves toughness.
Narrow thermoplastic forming window, hot forging & rolling stable only at 750~950℃; grain coarsening occurs at over-high temperature. Prone to built-up edge during machining, harder to cut than austenitic steel.
