416 is sulfur free-machining martensitic stainless steel bright bar.

MnS inclusions act as chip breakers and solid lubricants during cutting, greatly improving high-speed machining efficiency of Swiss lathes and automatic lathes while reducing tool wear, specially developed for mass small precision CNC parts. It retains core martensitic characteristic: hardenable via quenching & tempering, hardness reaches 32~48HRC after heat treatment with excellent wear resistance and tensile strength.

Soft annealed condition has moderate plasticity only for simple turning; severe cracking occurs during deep drawing, cold heading and bending, not suitable for forming processes. Two standard heat treatment routes: Full annealing at 750~850℃ for soft machinable state; oil quenching at 980~1050℃ + tempering at 200~400℃ to achieve high hardness & wear resistance.

Nickel & molybdenum free, its corrosion resistance is equivalent to 410, only resistant to dry atmosphere, fresh water and neutral weak acid, poor performance in brine, seawater and chloride media. Critical limitation: High sulfur causes porosity and hot cracking during welding; MnS inclusions degrade pitting resistance drastically, prohibited for welded structures and anti-corrosion pressure components.
