430 is general cost-effective fully ferritic stainless steel bright bar.
Nickel-free composition greatly cuts raw material cost. Its resistance to atmosphere, fresh water and weak food organic acid is superior to carbon steel but inferior to 304. It cannot be hardened by quenching due to no martensitic transformation; annealing at 700~850℃ softens material and relieves cold working stress to improve toughness.
Moderate plasticity only for simple bending & shallow stamping, prone to cracking during deep drawing and cold heading. Hot forming window limited to 750~900℃; overheating causes grain coarsening & embrittlement. Cold working leads to rapid work hardening. Stable mass CNC machining available, high thermal conductivity causes tool built-up edge and higher cutter wear than austenitic steel.
